Tile advice and design ideas
1. Research your home for styles and colors
The hardest part of any project has to be choosing the tile itself. Let me help, here at Jacksonville Tile Pro we have the craftsmanship and knowledge to install your tile, but we also have the background to help you create a truly unique and custom design.
Tile is one of the most creative and cost-effective floor and wall coverings. Tile is very durable, strong, easy to clean, and fire resistant. Tile can be both glazed or unglazed and the variation in color is boundless.
Ceramic tile is manufactured from different types of clay, sands, and other natural materials. The body of the tile is molded into shape and fired at high temperatures in a kiln. Glazes are created from different minerals that are mixed with a clay base and applied to the tile itself. The tile is then fired. The process and the materials used, allows for an enormous range of color, design and shape variations.
Tile may be made of clay, it can be cut from stone such as marble, granite, limestone, and slate. Tile may be mass produced or created individually by one person.
How To Choose The Right Tile
Tile Finish : High Gloss VS Polished
A tile that has a high-gloss finish can be extremely slippery when it gets wet. Choose a matte finish for safety, unless you plan to put a throw rug down.
A high gloss or polished finish looks very elegant because of the reflections from windows and lights as you move through the room.
Floors : I recommend 3/8 or thicker. Thinner tile is much weaker.
Walls : Around 1/4 inch is fine.
Tile Backsplash : Neutral Colors
Advantage : Makes your room appear larger.
Disadvantage : It shows dirt easier in cooking areas.
Tile and moisture
If you tile the ceiling of your bathroom along with the walls it helps prevent moisture damage to the sheet rock and paint.
Tile Border Strip
A matching border usually comes with the tile you choose. Keep in mind, if you do not like the border from the manufacturer, you can pick one from another. However, make sure the thickness and width of their tile matches as close as possible. If the width is not the same, you can still use them on a brick joint layout.
The field tile should match the thickness of your border. If your border is thinner, then it needs to be back Buttered so they are flush.
Deco Dots are accents in the middle of your field tile or other areas that are usually. 2x2, 4x4 and other various sizes. You need to poay attention to the thickness here also.
Purchase Extra Tile
Purchase an additional 10% of the tile you are using for a straight run and an additional 15% for diagonal runs. This also helps when the dye lots are different as each dye lot is fired seperatly and there could be slight differences in the tile.
Bullnose tile has a rounded edge that finish off the ends of tile. The tile supplier will usually ask you for the linear footage of the area to be installed, so remember to measure for it.
Measuring Linear Footage
A linear foot is 12 inches
Porcelain is a very strong and dense material. It can be difficult to work with if applying to walls with intricate cuts. It is difficult to cut a hole in the center of certain types of porcelain tile, but it can be done. I suggest purchasing extra tile for this paticular purpose. Most stores will accept returns on unused boxes, within a certain period of time.
